Inferences: Finding Everyday Clues

Today, we read "Louie, His Cousin, and His Other Cousin," "Geraldo No Last Name," and "Edna's Ruthie" from House on Mango Street. We make inferences (assumptions based on observations and clues) all the time. From observing people's clothes, to finishing fragment ideas, to coing home to particular messes, we use these clues and our own built knowledge to come to reasonable conclusions. Understanding inference is key to understanding theme, indirect characterization, symbolism, and all other subtle meanings of literature. Check out this great Pinterest board for more examples and clever ways to understand inference.
