"A Sound of Thunder:" A Twist on the Hero's Journey

Today, we read Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder." This story thrills with time travel, dinosaurs, shady characters, and suspense. Instead of following the Hero's Journey step-by-step like yesterday's Captain America, "A Sound of Thunder" manipulates the story to add fear and excitement to the mood. Remember, the more modern a text is, the more likely the archetypes are manipulated and changed. The more ancient a text is, the more likely the Hero's Journey is followed exactly and characters fit only one archetype.

Tomorrow, we will continue to analyze this text and figure out exactly how Bradbury uses and manipulates the standard Hero's Journey. Remember, you will have a cold-read quiz on Friday, identifying character archetypes, labeling plot as steps of the Hero's Journey, and R-A-C-E-ing an identification of the hero archetype. Check back on the PowerPoint from this unit to review!
