Hey, Boo!

We are officially entering the unit of the beloved classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Students will be begin reading next week, both in class and outside of class for homework.

Today, we read one of the many reviews for the documentary Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird. This "compelling documentary," as reviewed by Marshall Fine, shows us the history of Nelle Harper Lee, the publication of the book, and the Alabama of the 30's and 40's that serves as the text's setting. Though many literary experts argue that a text should be able to stand alone without understanding of the author and/or historical background, To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those texts that so closely integrates reality and personal experience that both are valuable in preparing to read the novel.

Look here next week to see a copy of the unit reading schedule and for other updates to the PowerPoint and assignments for this unit.
