We've eased into the year with a topic that is familiar: characterization. Characters can be labelled in two ways: (1) round or flat; and (2) dynamic or static. The PowerPoint with our notes on the matter are posted under the "Sophomore" tab above.

Our focus has been on discovering character through indirect and direct characterization quotes from "Like the Sun" by R. K. Narayan and "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson. Just like in real life, we can determine characters' traits by observing their feelings, actions, speech, and thoughts. From understanding the character and his/her motivations, goals, and conflicts, we can further discuss and explore the full meanings of texts.
